What Are Crypto-Stocks
"Crypto-stocks" are listed companies whose business or balance sheet is deeply tied to crypto. Buy their tokenized versions and you hold a double wrapper: an on-chain token tracking a stock that itself tracks crypto. Understanding the nesting matters.
Three types
① Crypto-business companies
Their business is the industry:
- COIN (Coinbase) — exchange; revenue scales with trading volume;
- HOOD (Robinhood) — retail broker with a meaningful crypto revenue share;
- CRCL (Circle) — USDC issuer; earnings track rates and USDC float.
② Digital-Asset Treasury companies (DAT)
Corporate treasuries turned into coin vaults; the stock is high-beta to the coin:
- MSTR (MicroStrategy/Strategy) — the flagship bitcoin-treasury stock, often trading at its own premium to coin NAV;
- SOL/ETH treasury companies (e.g. SOL-holding DFDV) — same logic, different coin.
③ Mining and infrastructure
Miners and rig/hashpower firms: exposure = coin price × power-cost scissors × hashrate competition.
Why tokenized crypto-stocks behave differently
- Double volatility: coin → stock → token, each layer amplifying; during closed market hours with big coin moves, crypto-stocks routinely top our premium/discount board (filter by the crypto-stock tag to see it live).
- DAT stacked premiums: MSTR can trade above its coin NAV, and the token can trade above MSTR. We only measure the second layer (token vs stock) — research mNAV separately for the first.
- Closed-market proxy effect: when stocks sleep, traders use crypto-stock tokens to pre-price tomorrow's open — a source of both opportunity and the worst gap risk.
FAQ
- How is a crypto-stock different from just buying the coin?
- It is equity: on top of coin exposure you take operating leverage, dilution, regulation and governance. Return paths and volatility differ materially from spot.
- Why are crypto-stock premiums largest during closed hours?
- Coins move 24/7 while the stock price is frozen at the close. When coins rally, the market pre-prices tomorrow's open through these tokens — the 'premium' vs the stale close is expectation, not mispricing you can arbitrage.
- How does this site tag crypto-stocks?
- Assets carry the crypto_stock tag; use the type filter on the markets page to isolate them.
